The high majority of Pećani people went to Chicago as their first address in the US. If unable to find work there they travelled across the USA to mainly mining areas to find work, including Utah, Colorado, Minnesota and Wyoming.
The main streets in Chicago they went to were all in South Chicago; Green Bay Avenue, Torrence Avenue and The Strand (often referred to as Strand Street and from 1936 renamed to Avenue ‘O’) and to a limited group of numbered buildings, presumably tenements.
There were a large number of Budisvaljević (28 homesteads) and Svilar (43) in Pećani in 1915. To add further confusion some Budisvaljević and Masnikosa state their home was Bunić, but neither surnames are from Bunić so they are from Pećani. Overall, trying to identify a specific family from only the immigration record is very difficult given the many same names. Some surnames were unique to Pečani, such as Masnikosa, but even in this case there’s no certainly as the below example of two people called Stevo Masnikosa.
Please do share any information about any of the people listed below by emailing the website on lika.ancestors@yahoo.com. Any photographs of the buildings in Chicago that the Lika folk lived in on first arrival would be gratefully received and posted on the website.
Relations
Budisavljević, Mandić | Milivoj Mandić is referenced by a number of the Budisavljevićs as their relative living in Chicago. There were no Mandić in Pećani, but there were in neighbouring Jošani. Given the stated relationships, it’s likely, that Milivoj’s mother was a Budisavljević. In 1899, two Milivoj Mandić from Jošani arrived in the USA on the same ship, one of them travelling to his friend Mane Budisavljević in Chicago. This Milivoj was born in 1856 and so at 43 years old he certainly returned to Lika, however it is clear he stayed for at least a decade, perhaps across multiple visits. Stevo Budisavljević1909 says Milivoj Mandić is his brother, which clearly he is not. Despite the age difference they could be cousins, which could mean that MaksimB1906 and RadeB1907 are cousins or bothers to StevoB1909 or simply that Milivoj was a known person in the US and therefore some of the stated relationships were made up for immigration purposes. |
Budisavljević, Masnikosa | In the below records Maksim Budisavljević1906 and 1912 could be the same person although the birth year is different by two years. MaksimB1912 says he’s never been to the USA previouly therefore assume they are different people. The WW1 record for Maksim has a birthday of June 1888 and therefore very likely he is MaksimB1906. MaksimB1912 states Stevo Masnikosa is his brother-in-law whereas ManeB1911 has the same named person at the same address as his uncle. The chances of Stevo Masnikosa being both relations to similarly aged Budisavljevićs is unlikely. However on the same ship that Stevo1909 arrived on, another Lika traveller lists Stevo Masnikosa as living at the same address that Stevo1909 was also destined for. Almost certainly two Stevo Masnikosas were living at ‘8926 Strand’ when ManeB1911 and then MaksimB1912 arrived. Given StevoM1909 says he’s married on arrival to the US and MaksimB1912 was single, we can assume that Maksim’s sister was married to StevoM1909. |
Budisavljević | Bude Budisavljević1904 and Luka Budisavljević1906 both state that Stevan Jelić is their uncle therefore assume they are brothers. In addition, their mother, a Jelić was from Śiroka Kula. Through a number of a records it seems that a Bude Budisavljević was already in the USA for around 2 years in 1904. He is referenced by Mane BudisavljevićAPR1904 and Pajo Budisavljević1904 as their brother. It’s just as likely they are cousins rather than brothers but clearly all three are related to each other. It is also likely this is the same Bude Budisavljević who Dane Dozet1904 states is his nephew. |
Masnikosa | StevanM1904 is going to brother Jovo and StevanM1909 is going to brother Jovan. Given the difference in age they are definitely two different people. Stevan1904 is very likely the same person referenced by Mane Budisavljević in 1911 as his uncle. |
